Profile vs Fresnel vs Panel: How to Combine the Three Studio Lighting Series

Profile, Fresnel and panel lights solve different problems. Learn what each HEYI series does best — and how to combine them into one complete studio lighting system.

Theatre and auditorium LED lighting
Every studio, theatre and conference project eventually asks the same question: which LED fixture belongs where — profile spot light, Fresnel spot light, or flat panel soft light? The short answer: they are not competitors. Each series solves a different lighting task, and most professional setups use all three.

LED Profile Spot Light: precision framing and projection

Profile spot lights (also called ellipsoidal or framing spotlights) are built for controlled, sharp light. An internal optical system and adjustable framing shutters cut clean, straight edges, mask spill light and project gobos for background texture. HEYI LED profile spot lights cover 19°, 26°, 36° and 50° fixed beam angles plus a 25°~50° zoom option, with CRI≥95, TLCI≥95 and TM30 Rf≥93 colour performance. Typical jobs: actor highlighting, podium framing and accent lighting in theatres, studios and live events. For outdoor stages, a waterproof IP65 die-cast version is available.

LED Fresnel Spot Light: soft, zoomable beams

Fresnel spot lights produce a soft-edged, gradually fading beam that flatters skin tones. The 175 mm Fresnel lens and zoom range (15°-68° electric, or 15°~55° manual) let one fixture cover both close-up interviews and wider stage areas. HEYI Fresnel models reach TLCI≥98 with R9>93, and selected versions support constant-power CCT adjustment — colour temperature changes without power jumps. Typical jobs: key light and fill light for film shooting, video recording and stage performance.

LED Flat Panel Soft Light: even, shadowless fill

Flat panel soft lights deliver wide, uniform illumination from a large-area light-emitting surface. A 120° beam angle covers big areas with fewer fixtures, and the low-glare light-guide plate keeps talent comfortable during long sessions. HEYI panels achieve CRI(Ra)≥97, TLCI≥98 and RG0 blue-light safety. Typical jobs: base fill for news studios, live streaming, interviews and virtual production. The fanless SBW series keeps noise out of sound-sensitive rooms, while the 5-in-1 RGBCW version adds creative colour mixing on top of broadcast-grade white light.

How the three series work together

A practical starter configuration for a small studio: one profile spot light for the host's key light and framing, one or two Fresnel lights for back light and side fill, and one panel light as the base soft source. The three series share DMX512 and RDM control, flicker-free 0-100% linear dimming and consistent colour families, so fixtures from different series sit together on the same DMX chain without colour drift between camera cuts.

Quick selection checklist

Need sharp shadows, gobo projection or tight framing — choose the profile series. Need soft key or back light at changing distances — choose the Fresnel series. Need broad, silent, camera-safe fill — choose the panel series. Mixing all three is not a compromise; it is the standard configuration for professional studio lighting.
